In the current social-political context, where the borders between countries of the EU have disappeared, certain countries are faced with an increasing number of immigrants. Among these, there are Romanian citizens that execute a sentence, causes of this phenomenon being, among others, the difficulty to adapt to a new environment, to a different society.
Understanding the importance of humanizing the detention medium, of using the sentence time efficiently and of maintaining the Romanian citizens in custody in permanent contact with public international information, the National Administration of Penitentiaries Romania has started the project ‘Books for Romanian detainees in others countries’.
This project implies the collaboration with institutions that can supply volumes of books with the purpose of making them available to Romanian detainees in European prison systems, especially in the following countries: Italy, Spain, Belgium, Denmark, United Kingdom, Greece. The project could be extended to those countries that are interested.
The partner of this project is the Institute ‘Eudoxiu Hurmuzachi’ for Romanians everywhere and through which the books in the Romanian language are collected and transferred to European prison systems. The first lot of 12 649 volumes offered by the Institute ‘Eudoxiu Hurmuzachi will be distributed to the prison systems in Spain, Belgium and Greece.
