SOMEC Launch Event: 27th June 2013

SOMEC – Serious Offending by Mobile European Criminals

The SOMEC project began in January 2013 with the aim of developing the effective transfer of offender information between EU states to meet the developing problem of mobile serious, violent and sexual offenders.

The project is well underway in assessing the threat posed to European Citizens when serious, violent and sexual offenders travel between EU Member States. The next steps will involve identifying the methods used and the effectiveness of mechanisms used by EU Member States in the management of this high risk category of offenders. A final output of the project will be the dissemination of best practice and a set of recommendations to facilitate the improved exchange of information across jurisdictions and enhance law enforcement and case management in this area.

Currently, the project is in the process of identifying stakeholder needs in relation to the management of serious, violent and sexual offenders. In order for the project to meet its aims, it will require participation from both law enforcement and justice departments throughout the EU.

The SOMEC launch event will be held in London, United Kingdom at the Church House Conference Venue. The event will be opened by the Home Secretary, Theresa May and closed by the Chief Executive Officer of NOMS, Michael Spurr. The conference will be of relevance to experts and practitioners in case/offender management and law enforcement who would ideally be able to both contribute to the conference and also act as a future contact point for your country to assist in driving the project forward. This conference will provide you with the opportunity to share and gain valuable experience and knowledge for your organisation in the field of managing these groups of offenders in your jurisdictions.
