14-16 October 2019, Ljubljana, Slovenia
After the 2015 Network Event “ Prisons of the Future “ organized in The Hague, EuroPris together with the Slovenian Prison Administration organized from 14 – 16 October the first Workshop on Real Estate in the city center of Ljubljana. The Workshop was attended by some 66 participants out of 23 different countries. The organization and coordination went smoothly.
A big variety of interested people participated: Real Estate & Logistic Senior & Middle Management Staff from prisons, Architects, Engineers, specialists in related services from business activities such as Education, ICT, Family Relations and also responsible staff from NGO’s. They all guaranteed a interactive workshop with a lot of discussions.
The thematic work done by the EuroPris Real Estate Expert group during their 2018 – 2019 working periode, “Designing for Rehabilitation and Designing for women “ , were highlighted with each 4 presentations or interventions during plenary and/or break out sessions. All members of the EuroPris Expert group showed their commitment during those 2 days. They were involved in specific roles as chair or moderator in interactive sessions, discussions, world café tour. Their interventions were appreciated by the participants.
Academic contributions from Prof. Dr. Yvonne Jewkes and Prof. Dr. Dominique Moran gave a broader scope in this area and were well connected with the “ psychological impact on the business activity “ of the designing proces of prisons towards staff and inmates. A specific interactive plenary on chapters of their Handbook “ Towards Humane Prisons “ was organized by staff members of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
Contributions on specific topics as “ Delivering Major Prison Construction Projects , Energy Management & Sustainability, Age Appropriate Solutions and prisons of the Future “ went into more specific discussions related to actual core business issues of building, renovation and complex construction projects. The overal feed back showed that all agencies are confronted with these new thematic approaches and are looking for future proof and ( often ) digital solutions. An important question to be answered for the next decade is clearly “ Do we still can construct prisons that will be used without serious difficulties in daily operational management for more than 25 years? “
The Slovenian Prison Service supported the whole Workshop with excellent logistic transport. Before the start of the Workshop but also at the end, 2 facilities, a prison for women and the Ljubljana remand prison, could be visited. Explanation was given on the actual plans of renovation and construction in Slovenia.
