We have one “Director” per prison. We call this person the Governor in Charge. Beneath them in their management team they have a group of senior managers who are responsible for areas of the prison operation or functions. How many in the team is determined by the size and complexity of the prison regime and population and the risk factors attributable to that prison.
Are there differences in the job profiles that you recruit/appoint as prison director? The constituent parts of the job description and person specification are broadly the same for all appointments at Governor in Charge level. There are 2 Governor Grades and the more senior one has a requirement to have people operating a slightly more elevated level. I can e-mail the set of National Occupational Standards that we use to describe the role?
Does your country have systems that determine the career/career policy for prison directors? There are different pathways for people into the Governor Grade. Some will come through the ranks of prison staff and others will be direct entrants (graduate programmes) who will come in at a senior management grade. Development pathways thereafter are individualised but in the main contain broadly the same elements. Development and progression are significantly influenced by performance in role and personal development activities undertaken.
Do prison directors change regularly the prison they are working in?Governors do change prisons. Sometimes that is on promotion from the lower grade to the higher one but lateral transfers also take place. There is no fixed time period for these moves. It can vary from 1 or 2 years to 9 or 10 years
Are prison directors sometimes moved from one prison to another?See the response to Q4
If prison directors are moved from one prison to another, which criteria is used to move them?Moves tend to be predicated upon a vacancy arising or a request for a move and the perceived best fit from the existing cadre to fill that gap. That can be a lateral move or one from a promotion process. Governors will often be asked their personal and professional preferences.
There is only one prison director in each prison. Besides that we have a number of prison managers who are responsible for different departments or activities in the prison. The number is depending of the size of the prison. One or two of these managers can have the role of prison director when the ordinary director i absent. In some prisons we have permanent full time deputy prison directors.
Are there differences in the job profiles that you recruit/appoint as prison director? The job profiles differs due to what kind of prison it is. The profile i different for att prison director working in a high security prison with many places compared with a smaller open prison. A prison director needs to have an academic degree and he or she has completed several internal courses and has normally participated in our management training programme. Prison directors competence profiles differs.

In some cases the director change prison after that period but in most cases the prison director stay in the same prison for a longer period. We have no defined system for reagularly change of prison directors
