Introduction: Inspired by UK the Danish Prison and Probation Service some ten years ago trained dogs to track mobile phones - for different reasons the experiment was never made permanent. We are now considering to try again and would like to know if mobile detection dogs are used in other countries and what the experiences are.

Service dogs are trained to find objects of any kind in an area the service dog is familiar with. The dogs are not specifically trained to find narcotic substances, as the senior guards (dog leaders) do not have the necessary specific knowledge and material and technical resources. It is possible that in the future this issue will be dealt with by training the service dogs to find narcotic substances by using the material and technical resources and knowledge of other law enforcement institutions.
Do you use dogs to find mobile phones? In the places of imprisonment in Latvia service dogs are used only for securing the restricted territory. Taking into consideration, that forbidden objects are being thrown over the fence, the service dogs often find objects in the restricted territory, sometimes these objects happen to be mobiles phones. No service dogs are being trained specifically to finding mobile phones. In the future we are not planning to train service dogs to find mobile phones.
What scent is the dog trained on to find mobile phones?Service dogs are not trained to find specific scent; however, they are trained to find foreign object (by smell) in an area the service dog is familiar with.

Dear Colleagues In reference to your questions about using dogs to find mobile phones in prisons and custodies are the following notes what the Swedish prison and correctional treatment have done during some years. Today dogs are not used to find mobile phones specifically. The reason why is that, at the end of a project whit search-dogs to find these items there was a technical development in the same subject. A technical device called “Mobi-finders” appeared at the market and was used to find mobile phones effectively. Despite this, I thought I could give you some information about our project in these matters. A couple of years ago one of our dog-instructors started an experiment whit one dog where the purpose was only to search mobile-phones and nothing else. The dog was trained at three substances (items); • Lithium-batteries (both full-loaded and empty batteries, there is a chemical difference) • Sim-cards (this is a difficult substance for a dog, small amount of scent) • The mobile-phone it self (electronic device) After training these substances apart from each other they where put together to create a collective scent. This training where accomplished in both the prison environment and in a selection-lane where the dog also was exposed to other similar substances (items) just to check that the dog was doing the right selection. It was working satisfactory and the dog was not indicating other electronic devices. This training worked out well and the dog was in duty for one and a half years. After that the technical device took over. The request in this type of dogs where at that period of time in a low level which contributed in the decision to end the project. The conclusion of the project was that it´s indeed a possible activity to work with a search-dog to detect mobile-phones.
