Introduction: The Centre for Legal Studies and Specialised Training is an autonomous research body attached to the Ministry of Justice of the Government of Catalonia. Its fundamental mission is to support the quality of the services provided by the Ministry by conducting research in the fields of criminal enforcement such as prison, probation and victim support amongst others. One of the strands of its research activity is conducting recidivism studies. In particular, since 1987 and every 5 years, it carries out a prison recidivism study of adult released inmates. The findings of the four studies conducted so far can be accessed here. In the upcoming fifth edition of the recidivism research, we would like to include a section on the types of recidivism studies that are being conducted with regard to other prison administrations in Europe. We would like to know which prison administrations count on in-house or external recidivism studies and whether they could share their findings with us so that we could make a comparative analysis. Have you conducted a study on the prison population recidivism study since 2014? If your answer is yes, we would like to ask you the following questions:
Currently in the Moldova Penitentiary system, studies of Prison Population Recidivism are not held. However, some information about recidivism is included in the quartely reports.
Have you obtained another recidivism indicator? If your answer is yes, please describe the procedure to develop such an indicator and the findings related to it.-
Which has been the criteria to measure recidivism, (return to prison either accused or sentenced for new crimes, detention at the Police level, etc...)?-
What has been the length of the follow-up time-span (maximum, minimum and average)?-
Which is the dimension of the sample and the way to select it for the study?-
Is there a report or publication about this study or studies that you could share with us or that we could access?-

In Slovakia, the source of information on criminal acts committed by recidivists and on dynamics of their development is the statistics of the Ministry of Justice, General Prosecution, Police Force, and our own statistics, i.e. statistics of the Corps of Prison and Court Guard. However, the methodology of reporting recidivism and also the approach of the individual statistical units to processing the relevant background materials varies significantly and the informative capability is influenced by the way of defining recidivism in chosen records (mainly the differences in the initial and final points of measurement of the recidivism). However, the problem with the methodology of determination the penitentiary recidivism reaches beyond the frontiers of the Slovak Republic. With the aim to set the internationally and comparable methodology of reporting the penitentiary recidivism, we put a question through the KMS system in 2019 (https://www.europris.org/epis/kms/?detail=346).

Is there a report or publication about this study or studies that you could share with us or that we could access?A brief report on the importance of proper reporting of recidivism as an objective background for adoption of systematic measures in penal policy of the State is available in the electronic textbook from a conference on re-socialisation of prisoners and its perspectives (in Slovak language) https://www.konferencia-resocializacia.sk/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Zbornik-Konferencia-final-po-korekcii-nátlačku.pdf. This paper (p. 54 and following) contains a detailed evaluation of the answers from the abovementioned KMS and an analysis of data from chosen studies dealing with methodology of penological recidivism.
