Introduction:
Time and again, in several Austrian Prisons there is a regional cooperation with different local sports clubs (particularly football and table tennis).
Which goal does the cooperation have?The main goals are on the one hand a meaningful leisure activity for inmates, on the other hand the support of an ability to engage in a team ("guidance" for team play).
Are there sports ambassadors used as role models in prisons?No.
Yes, all prisons in Flanders have forms of cooperation with outside clubs. The prisons of Brussels is at the starting point, but has the same ambitions. There is a wide range of sport branches involved. It is a customised approach based upon local possibilities, national/regional/local policy, availability in the vicinity,... based upon the needs of several actors and the participants. Branches that invove outside clubs (or teachers of clubs/federations) are: Athletics (running, jogging, walking,...), Ball games (Basketball, Football, Minifoot, Handball, Tjoekball,badminton, tennis, Table tennis, Volleyball, netball, Softball, Petanque),Throwing games (Kubb, Dodge ball,...), Dance (Breakdance, street dance, classical dance styles, zumba, aerobic, insanity,...) Not categorised (tai chi, Yoga, ropeskipping, frisbee, ...) and more
Which goal does the cooperation have?This varies, based upon the needs (cf. question 1) -internal role (stress management, social contact, daily activation, stepstone to other activities/offer, how to handle rules, how to interact with others,...) -integrative role (non formal training/education, building social competences, vocational training, ...) -personal role (physical health, mental health, wellbeing, getting to know own limits, fairplay, creating habits, concept of meaningfull leisure time, setting personal goals, integration into sport clubs, implicitely raising chances to employment, anger management, use sport as a means to achieve goals in e.g. anger management therapy, ...)
Are there sports ambassadors used as role models in prisons?In some programs (mainly with regards to health, sporttechnical, anger management,) rolemodels are used from outside or within prison walls. The concept of a rolemodel is however not always applicable, relevant or an added value at all.

Prisons/penitentiaries and juvenile correctional institutions as a rule don't have cooperation with local sports clubs, but have sport activities organized within penal institution. Exceptions is Penitentiary in Glina which has ongoing cooperation with local basketball club Glina and football clubs from Glina and Topusko (football clubs Banovac and Topusko), with whom they occasionally organize football matches. Prisoners from penitentiaries in Turopolje and Lipovica once a year participate in football tournament organized for drug addicts by one NGO (Association for Creative Social Work Zagreb)
Which goal does the cooperation have?Goal of cooperation is to motivate prisoners to actively participate in the process of enforcement of the prison sentence, to maintain contacts with outside world, as well as to introduce local society with prison population and to diminish or eliminate prejudices towards them.
Are there sports ambassadors used as role models in prisons?Prisons/penitentiaries and juvenile correctional institutions in general don't use sports ambassadors as role models, except Penitentiary in Lepoglava, which regularly invites high profile sportsmen to visit prisons and to talk to prisoners with a purpose of bringing sport closer to them through health and social aspect and to emphasize importance of presentation of Croatia in Europe and across the world through sports.
Five prisons (Sulkava, Ylitornio, Pyhäselkä, Kestilä and Kerava) announced that they have cooperation with sports clubs. Type of sports are indoor hockey, body building, zumba, volleyball and football. In addition the sport clubs organize different kinds of sport events in prisons.
Which goal does the cooperation have?Goals of the action are: -Activation of prisoners (also female prisoners) -Educate prisoners to work in a group -Teach correct sport techniques -Organize fitness tests -Teach prisoners to work as a voluntary such as competition officials.
Are there sports ambassadors used as role models in prisons?Four prisons reported that they have used sports ambassadors as role models. Ambassadors have been boxers, table tennis players and one soccer player. Some of them have told prisoners about their substance abuse problem and how they have survived. 20 prisons of total 26 prisons answered to the query. In Finland almost all closed prisons have their own sport instructors who organize sport classes. In some open prisons prison guards take care of sport activities.
Die Jugendanstalt Neustrelitz kooperiert mit dem Sportverein Tollense Sharks e.V., der die Sportart American Football für die Inhaftierten anbietet. Daneben verfügt die Jugendanstalt über eine eigene „Gefängnis-Fußballelf“, den FC Neustrelitz 07, welcher am Spielbetrieb der Kreisklasse Ost I teilnimmt. Die Mannschaft wurde von der Sepp-Herberger-Stiftung des Deutschen Fußball-Bundes e.V. in das bundesweite Resozialisierungsprojekt „Anstoß für ein neues Leben“ aufgenommen. Die Patenschaft für das Team übernahm der FC Hansa Rostock e.V. Die Justizvollzugsanstalt Stralsund kooperiert im Bereich des offenen Vollzuges mit dem Fußballverein Stralsunder FC. Die JVA Bützow kooperiert mit dem FSV Rühn, Sektion Tischtennis „alte Herren“. Das Training erfolgt einmal wöchentlich in der JVA Bützow. Die JVA Bützow lädt daneben den Verein TSV Bützow e.V. zwei- bis dreimal in die Anstalt ein, um Tischtennisturniere durchführen. Ansonsten kooperiert die Anstalt mit Einzelpersonen, die Sportgruppen leiten.
Which goal does the cooperation have?Die Zusammenarbeit der Vollzugsanstalten mit Sportvereinen dient in erster Linie dem Training, also der körperlichen Auslastung der Inhaftierten. Die Inhaftierten sollen daneben aber auch Werte wie Teamgeist und Fair-Play erlernen. Das Projekt „Anstoß für ein neues Leben“ in der Jugendanstalt Neustrelitz bietet neben dem wöchentlichen Training der Mannschaft des FC Neustrelitz 07 auch Schiedsrichter- und Trainerseminare sowie Workshops und Anti-Gewalt-Trainings für die Inhaftierten. Der FC Neustrelitz 07 wird durch das Projekt außerdem so unterstützt, dass Fahrtkosten für anreisende Mannschaften und Schiedsrichterleistungen bezuschusst werden.
Are there sports ambassadors used as role models in prisons?In den Justizvollzugsanstalten sowie der Jugendanstalt Mecklenburg-Vorpommerns gibt es keine externen Sportbotschafter, die als Vorbilder für die Inhaftierten dienen. Als Sportbotschafter in den Anstalten können aber die Sportbeamten angesehen werden.
Correctional institution for juveniles which is located in Cesis cooperates with Latvian ice hockey team “Dinamo Riga” and one of the biggest Latvian street sports and cultural movement “GhetoGames”. Other prisons in Latvia do not cooperate with sport clubs, mainly Latvian prisons cooperates with theater directors, amateur theaters, music groups, various types of arts and crafts artists.
Which goal does the cooperation have?The main aim of this cooperation is to improve juvenile views on the importance of education in life.
Are there sports ambassadors used as role models in prisons?Sports ambassadors (athletes from street sports and cultural movement “GhetoGames”) are used as role models. They show example for juveniles how to improve sports culture, teach them to see other opportunities in life than crime, nurture attitude - life without crime and main tool for them in work with juveniles are their life experiences, achievements in sports, as well as the ideology of sport you get what you pit in.

Which goal does the cooperation have?Sport activities cover two dimensions, that is physical education and leisure time activities (caretaking, conservation/improvement of psychosomatic condition)
Are there sports ambassadors used as role models in prisons?Over half of prisons reported involvement of sport ambassadors in prison activities. Their role is to present a social success model based on healthy lifestyle, self-discipline and sport ethics.
At GREENOCK there have been one-off events with local boxing clubs in partnership with Police Scotland and local Inverclyde Council for young people 12 – 16, known to the authorities through criminal activity in an attempt to engage them in positive activity. At POLMONT there are partnerships with: -Sports Leader Scotland, where the establishment delivers Sports Leader Awards for young people, which ranges across a number of sports including badminton, short tennis and basketball. Sports Leader award affords participants the opportunity to develop essential life skills such as organisation, motivation, communication and working with others, through sport. -Fitness Scotland facilitates Gym Instructor Level One award and are about to pilot Gym Instructor Level Two award, which has not been delivered for young people in Polmont previously. -Scottish Football Association, in partnership we facilitate for staff and young people Coaching with Youth Footballers Level 1, 2 and 3. -Polmont uses these courses to develop young people through education and participation with a view to not only expanding their skills and knowledge of the field of sport, but also to enhance their opportunities for employment. -Polmont uses young people as Mentors in the Sports Centre, in a camp style initiative called Drive. Young people who have low esteem and confidence who have never engaged in sport or fitness activities are encouraged to do so in partnership with the Sports Centre Staff and Mental Health Staff with NHS. At ADDIEWELL there is a working relationship with Street Soccer Scotland, football. Also Tough Talk attends the prison to talk to prisoners about weightlifting once a year. At CORNTON VALE the female prisoners are involved in various sports delivered by the organisation Youth Scotland. Youth Scotland is the largest non-uniformed youth work organisation in Scotland, reaching across the country delivering services and support to young people, volunteers and workers. -Through Youth Scotland's Project 'Breaking Barriers', the female Prisoners are provided with opportunities to take part in a variety of sports and physical activities including- football, basketball, roller skating, hand ball, table tennis, badminton, judo and other fitness activities. -The females are also provided with opportunities to complete qualifications- Sports Leaders level 1 and 2 and Dance Leaders level 1 and 2. These qualifications are nationally recognised and provide them with skills including- organisation, planning, leadership, decision making and also sport specific skill development. -The project allows the women to not only take part in the activities but also learn about the benefits and positive impacts. At KILMARNOCK there is work in partnership with various sports clubs. Currently the prison runs a commonwealth project which uses the excitement of the games as a mechanism to inspire prisoners to engage in physical activity and educational life skills, as well as, the Football Fans in Training Initiative (FFIT) which is led by Kilmarnock football Club. Clubs involved: -Kilmarnock Amateur Weightlifting Club – Weightlifting -Howard Park Bowling Club – Indoor bowls -Cluarankwai Judo Club – Introductory Judo -Kilmarnock Harriers – Athletics -Kilmarnock Football Club – Football/Physical activity
Which goal does the cooperation have?BARLINNIE - holds events for Health Awareness and Equality and Diversity that involve members from outside organisations coming in and providing awareness sessions, these are very limited however throughout the year. GREENOCK - Diversion from crime. ADDIEWELL - Street Soccer's aim is to capture prisoners with 3 months or less and facilitate a course "Positive Change Through Football" to SQA level the goal is employability, education and training. Tough Talk's goal is change, they focus on where they have come from and how other people can manage change for better and more fulfilling lives. CORNTON VALE - Breaking barriers project has four strands- participation, leadership, training and health and wellbeing. Each of the four strands has specific outcomes, but the main goal for the project is to increase physical activity and education attainment whilst also improving mental health. KILMARNOCK - The commonwealth project has a number of goals. As well as the involvement of sports clubs they are paired with a classroom based life skills session. Life skill sessions are - -Maintaining Healthy Weight -Smoke Cessation -Employability -Healthy Adult Relationships -Play Development/Bonding -Mental Health -Alcohol -Health Literacy The key outcomes for these sessions are to – -Increase prisoners' knowledge on a series of health topics and life skills; -Increased prisoner physical activity levels; -Promotion of family involvement in physical activity, health education and life skills, steering families to lead sustainable healthier lives; -Signpost and develop pathways for prisoners to tackle health related issues; -Reduction in health inequalities faced by prisoners within the prison environment. The FFIT programme is a weight management programme designed to increase prisoners knowledge in issues related to diet and nutrition, increase physical activity and ultimately change behaviours steering them to achieve a healthier weight.
Are there sports ambassadors used as role models in prisons?BARLINNIE - Sports ambassadors – The prison holds two to three events a year under various banners. In these events the prison invites ex-professional football players into the establishment to promote events normally for a worthwhile charity. There is no regular sports ambassador within the establishment. ADDIEWELL – Two officials from Street Soccer promote change through football and assist the prison to facilitate football games involving the Street Soccer Team to raise awareness for the homeless and encourage change and healthy lifestyles. An official from Sports Leaders supports the staff in delivering Sport Leaders courses to ensure prisoners are afforded qualifications from the gym to help in employability and peer support throughout the prison. CORNTON VALE - Through the leadership element of the programme the prisoners are provided with the opportunity to deliver sport and physical activity opportunities to their peers and act as positive role models encouraging others to get involved. The project is currently developing a Breaking Barriers Ambassadors Project which will launch in May 2014. The ambassador programme will work with a small group of prisoners and train them as mentors to support other prisoners to become involved in physical activity. The ambassadors will gain qualifications and training allowing them to the deliver gym inductions and advice to their peers. There is also going to be opportunities for young people external to the prison to be able to come into the prison to take part in projects delivered by the ambassadors. KILMARNOCK - Previous work with Kilmarnock Amateur Weightlifting Club consisted of facilitating a weight lifting course. This course used their coach and one of their athletes as ambassadors in attempting to change the culture within the jail, surrounding weightlifting. They promoted appropriate training methods and conducted sessions on steroid abuse, raising awareness of the health implications of steroid use. Both Coach and athlete participated in the 2012 Olympics and are due to participate in the 2014 commonwealth games. Their high profiles also assisted in the course delivery. There is also a commonwealth ambassador assisting in a coaching capacity with the commonwealth project. The prison has run a Health Coaches initiative for approximately 18 months now. Selected prisoners are trained in the RSPH Health Promotion course and act as peer supporters to other prisoners under the supervision of the gym staff. NHS Heath Promotion team members have also provided training and support to the health champions.

Type of sports are: football, basketball, handball, tennis, athletics.
