This restriction is by site category rather than by site name (to allow prisoners greater access) In open prisons, prisoners also have access to laptops.

These allow prisoners access to the internet based on category of sites. USB dongle access is limited via a software package called Lumension, which prevents any type of USB modem being used by the PC/Laptop

Every prisoner given access to a system is issued with a Windows logon (Active Directory based) for which they must change the password upon their first logon.
How do the prisoners’ electronic services and the usage of mobile devices differ from each other in closed, semi-open, and open prisons?Prisoners in Open prisons are allowed the use of basic mobile phones (non Data) All mobile phones are banned in closed prisons There is no distinction between educational access in a closed prison and education in an open prison.

We are also examining methods of allowing communications between prisoners and University tutors. This communication would preferably be written and be via a censor (teacher, prison officer, etc). We are piloting a restricted phone in the Dochas Prison(female offenders) whereby Enhanced prisoners can recieve inbound calls (on a rota basis) for a period of 1 hour per week.
