BrugesIn 1981, the construction of a new prison complex was commenced in Sint-Andries-Brugge to replace the old male prison and the female penitentiary institution. After ten years, the penitentiary complex in Bruges was opened in November 1991 and the first prisoners were transferred. In March 1992, the female prisoners from the old women’s prison were transferred as well. The prison of Dendermonde was built between 1861 and 1863 and is one of the well-known Ducpétiaux institutions. This institution was renovated twice, in 1950-1951 and between 1964 and 1970. In 2013, i.e. 150 years after its first occupation, a new institution is to open its doors. It would also be the first time that the prison of Dendermonde is no longer located in the city centre.
