Introduction
Daily professional activity requires being in constant communication mode, which is related to relationships with different people. In standard situations, managing the communication process is relatively easy, but the reality changes radically when it comes to stressful, conflicting, difficult situations, where high levels of resistance and low levels of acceptance are expressed. Effective work performance in an organisational context is often highly dependent on effective communication with other people, in which case the management of occupational stress is critical. The issue is particularly relevant when it comes to correctional officers, who must perform their professional duties in a different physical and social environment, which includes both specific rules and regulations, as well as communication with inmates who have individual requirements and the need for psychological support.
Prison officers are often the first link in the chain of identifying and managing the needs of inmates, which increases their professional responsibility and requires well-developed communication and stress management skills.
Facilitated by the Training Center of Justice of Georgia and hosted by the Training Institute of the Dutch Custodial Institutions Service, participants learned techniques to manage occupational stress and improve interactions in high-pressure environments. An ideal learning for professionals such as prison officers who work in unique, fast-paced settings.
