Co-Located Prison Populations: Summary by the EuroPris Real Estate & Logistics Expert Group

This report, developed by the EuroPris Real Estate Expert Group, provides a rapid overview of co-located prison populations of juveniles and women across Europe. It supports the initial scoping phase of a new research initiative led by the University of Applied Science in Vienna—Secure Architectural Prison Design for Juveniles and Women (SAPJW). Commissioned by the Austrian Ministry of Justice, the SAPJW project follows the successful conclusion of the Efficient, Secure and Structural Detention Design of Prisons (ESSDDP) study. EuroPris contributed to both efforts through the participation of the Real Estate Expert Group Chair, who presented the Designing for Rehabilitation report (2019) and shared examples of best practices from across Europe. As European prison systems face increasing challenges of overcrowding and the need for more inclusive, purpose-built environments, this paper offers timely insights and practical considerations for future prison design.
