ICT In Prisons

Technology is rapidly changing and expanding in every field imaginable, in every aspect of our life, transforming it. We live in an information age where the digital revolution has created a knowledge base society surrounded by a high tech economy which has allowed rapid global communications and networking to shape modern society.

Technology in Prisons has also seen rapid development in the last years, having things unimagined a few years ago: internet access to prisoners, e-health and e-learning for prisoners, use of mobile devices in prison, iPads for officers, biometrics, video-conferencing, cloud services and much more.

Event Highlights

Over the past years, numerous events have focused on integrating digital technologies within prison systems, fostering in-depth discussions and exploring case studies on various relevant topics. To hone in on the most impactful areas, we reached out to ten members of the EuroPris ICT in Prisons Expert Group to identify active projects, key areas of interest, and the solutions they wish to gain insight into for their own prison systems.

One of the main areas highlighted across European prison systems is the collection and processing of data through Offender Management Systems (OMS). This workshop prioritised OMS as its core topic, reflecting its critical role in the digital evolution of prison management. A decade ago, OMS was the centrepiece of our discussions, but the technological landscape has transformed since then, expanding OMS functionalities and our expectations. The meaning and scope of OMS have evolved significantly over this period.

EuroPris, in cooperation with ICPA and CEP organised the second Technology in Corrections: Challenges for the Future on 15-17th May 2017 in Prague, Czech Republic.

The aim of this conference was to:

  • Challenge the private sector to develop innovative digital solutions for use in corrections to address issues facing prisons and probation today;
