Save the date: RESCALED: towards small scaled and community integrated detention (2019)
S A V E T H E D A T E
10 – 04 – 2019
BRUSSELS, BELGIUM
WHY ?
Our prisons are inventories of almost two centuries ago and stem from times where solitary confinement, segregation and isolation was estimated to be a solution to crime. Our modern society however is in transition and requires new, more humane detention forms in the interest of all people involved, based on new values.
RESCALED wants to thoroughly reform detention in Europe. Our prisons should be replaced by detention houses: small-scaled, differentiated and embedded in their immediate environment and community. By organising confinement in detention houses instead of prisons, it can better align with re-integration and restoration. Prisoners stay part of and connected with society. Society learns to deal with normalised detention forms and prisoners.

WHAT?
One of the first events will be a two-day conference on April 10th and 11th, 2019 in Brussels:
RESCALED: towards small scaled and community integrated detention
The first day (April 10th, 2019) will be held at the Free University of Brussels. It will give space to 150 people to learn more and exchange about this new penitentiary paradigm. This part of the conference will create the opportunity to share experiences and insights from transition theory, criminological and penological innovations, and to work together on a program giving direction to the strategic agenda of the movement.
The second day (April 11th, 2019) we will present the conclusions of day 1 to members of the European Parliament and the international press.
