Abstract
This paper summarises recommendations from the EPTA 2025 Conference on using training to improve prison staff wellbeing. Drawing on insights from 24 countries, it highlights the need for clear definitions of wellbeing embedded in organisational culture, supported by structured and evidence-based training. Key recommendations include developing hybrid, needs-based training models that promote mental health awareness, emotional intelligence, and stress management, alongside strengthening leadership capacities to foster supportive work environments. The paper also emphasises the importance of trauma-informed and relational approaches, mentoring systems, and continuous professional development. Overall, it positions training as a strategic tool to enhance staff wellbeing, improve retention, and contribute to safer prison environments.
