Introduction: We are trying to prepare a comparative report among European Prison Services about the deaths occur in prisons. Could you please assist us in answering the following questions.

What is the ratio (no of deaths/total prison population) in prisons of your country during 2014, 2015 and 2016?2014: 3/3.784 and 3/3.784 (average number of inmates) 2015: 3/3.422 and 2/3.422 (average number of inmates)

For the 12 months ending September 2014, there were a total of 234 deaths. Of which: 91 were self-inflicted 136 were death by natural causes 3 were homicide 4 were classified as Other' (an aggregated category consisting of two 'other/non-natural' and 'awaiting further information) For the 12 months ending September 2015, there were a total of 267 deaths. Of which: 95 were self-inflicted 153 were death by natural causes 7 were homicide 12 were classified as Other' (an aggregated category consisting of two 'other/non-natural' and 'awaiting further information) For the 12 months ending September 2016, the provisional figures state there were a total of 324 deaths. Of which: 1.1 were self-inflicted 1.8 were death by natural causes For the 12 months ending September 2016, the provisional figures state the number of deaths per 1,000 prisoners was 3.8. The information you have requested is published on the SPS website: http://www.sps.gov.uk/Corporate/Information/PrisonerDeaths.aspx However, as many of the deaths are recent, SPS is unable to provide the category they fall into because the Fatal Accident Inquiry has not yet taken place to provide a determination.
What is the ratio (no of deaths/total prison population) in prisons of your country during 2014, 2015 and 2016?SPS does not report deaths in custody in ratios relating to the overall prison population because of the small number of annual deaths in Scottish prisons. Such ratios do not provide meaningful trends or increases/decreases in year-on-year Scottish deaths in prison.

Number of deaths in: 2014 – 27 in total: 22 from illnesses, 5 – suicide; 2015 – 17 in total: 13 from illnesses, 3 – suicide, 1 – due to bodily injury; 2016 (first half) – 7 in total: 4 from illnesses, 2 – suicide, 1 – drug overdose.

In 2014 there were 16 deaths in prisons in total – all natural causes (illnes and/or old age) In 2015 there were 11 deaths in prisons in total – 10 natural causes (illnes and/or old age) and one suicide. In 2016 (until 7th of December) there were 10 deaths in prisons in total – all natural causes (illnes and/or old age).
What is the ratio (no of deaths/total prison population) in prisons of your country during 2014, 2015 and 2016?During 2014 there were total of 13539 inmates (all legal statuses) so the ratio of deaths in total prison population was 0,12%. During 2015 there were total of 11575 inmates (all legal statuses) so the ratio of deaths in total prison population was 0,1%. Data on total number of inmates during 2016 will be available after the end of the year.
