Introduction:
We never had dormitories in the Austrian Prison service but we use and always used multi-bed cells with a maximum occupancy of 6 persons. The percentage of the use of dormitories is under 10 %.
What is the percentage of the use of multi-bed cells for short term imprisonment? There are no statistics on that but it can be noted that short term prisoners are housed in multi-bed cells rather than in single cells; as far as possible inmates serving long sentences are accommodated in single cells.
Special Remarks or CommentsWe have multi-bed cells and dormitories for short- and long term imprisonment. Depending on the overpopulation in the prison.

Special Remarks or CommentsYes. According to the Spainsh Penitentiary law, multibed cells can be used for reasons of lack of space or for medical reasons. In Catalonia, all the new prissons built over the last 10 years, the principle is of two inmates per cell and, as a rule, the individual cells are used for compliance of closed regime and/or isolation.
What is the percentage of the use of multi-bed cells for short term imprisonment? Special Remarks or CommentsToday it is not considered a realistic hypothesis to try to perform the adherence to the principle of one inmate per cell ("principi cel·lular), not only because of the lack of places available for the prison authorities for certain levels of prison classification and profiles, which are the majority, but also and especially because the psychological profile of a large part of the prison population and their own expectations of the inmates recommend the use of shared rooms (two inmates per cell).
In the Czech prison system, we do not use any specific multi-bed cells for short term imprisonment.

Single cells are the rule for all categories of prisoners independently of the duration of their sentence or deprivation of liberty. Exceptions (2- or 3-some cells) may occur in case of overcrowding situations or if the concened prisoners expressly wish to stay together in a multiple cell.

Special Remarks or CommentsThe Polish Penal Executive Code does not specify the type of confinement facility (cell) that the inmate is placed in during his incarceration. It means that an inmate incarcerated for a short term could be placed in a single or multi-inmate cell, whereby latter instance is more prevalent.
What is the percentage of the use of multi-bed cells for short term imprisonment? In Polish Prison System there are 19 231 cells (total number). The number of 1-bed cells is 875, 2-bed cells 3 976. The rest of them are 3 or more bed cells.

Special Remarks or CommentsIn Croatia we mostly use multi-bed cells for accommodation of prisoners sentenced to short or longer sentences. However, they are not big dormitories, as in some countries. Usually our cells have 3 – 8 beds and exceptionally in some semi-open penitentiaries there are few cells with 10 – 15 beds. Single-bed cells are less represented in our prisons and penitentiaries.
What is the percentage of the use of multi-bed cells for short term imprisonment?Prisoners are accommodated in multi-bed cells as a rule. With exception of solitary confinements and rooms without dangerous objects, which are used as a punishment or as measures of obtaining order and security, single-bed cells are rare and they represent only about 1% of all cells in our prison system.
Special Remarks or CommentsNo
