Prison work involves challenging conditions, including subordination, constant exposure to threats, and high psychological strain. Officers are required to maintain strong psychophysical fitness, remain available at all times, and carry out duties under pressure and personal risk. The demanding nature of the job—marked by responsibility, shift work, and the threat of criminal liability—affects the well-being of prison staff. This is compounded by exposure to critical incidents such as suicides, self-harm, riots, and violence. Given these pressures, it is vital to understand the penitentiary system and the functioning of prison staff, in order to identify effective practices and address those that may jeopardise performance. Particular attention should be given to how officers use work resources to reduce stress, prevent burnout, and foster engagement.
