Additional information
Inspired by the new Austrian prisons of that time, it has the shape of a Latin cross. Finished in 1904, the institution was then considered as one of the best equipped in the country, with already electric light in the whole building. As time went by, the prison was extended with workshops, a sports hall, and so on, but the ancient buildings did not comply with the standards of the eighties any more. Considering the constant rise in the number of prisoners, the capacity of the prison was increased and the prison completely renovated. The cellular complex, whose initial shape could be compared with a reversed \”T\””, was modified with the building of two new wings that give it the shape of a reversed \””E\””. Inaugurated in 1998, the prison of Nivelles progressively reached its accommodation capacity (192 prisoners). Security works were set about at the back of the building too (installation of a perimeter detection system working with radar, as well as iron sheets at the back of the yard).”
