The prison of Ghent was first occupied in 1862 as an auxiliary prison for the “Tuchthuis van Vilain XIV aan de Coupure”” (house of correction of Vilain XIV on the Coupure), the central prison of Ghent. Since 1935, the institution has been the only prison in Ghent. In the past decades, the prison has been thoroughly renovated in several phases. Recently, a yard has been renovated and a smoke evacuation system has been installed in the cellular part of the institution.”
