Ireland has 13 prisons with a capacity to hold 4,666 prisoners. Most of these prisons operate at or above capacity with the average capacity of a prison being 115%.
The Irish Prison Service honours staff for their enduring commitment through Long Service Awards, marked by the presentation of service medals at key milestones:

Upon retirement, staff may also receive a Citation of Service, acknowledging their lifelong contribution.
Merit Awards celebrate acts of bravery, heroism, or exceptional service beyond the normal expectations of duty. These are awarded based on recommendations from local leadership and reviewed by the Staff Recognition Committee. Categories include:
The Stack Medal – The highest honour, awarded by the Minister for Justice for exceptional personal bravery.
Distinguished Service Medal – Awarded by the Director General for outstanding service.
Special Commendations – Certificates presented by Governors for notable deeds deserving formal recognition.
These awards recognise staff who contribute to the advancement of the Service through creativity, professionalism, and community impact. They celebrate both individual and team achievements in areas such as prison management, offender rehabilitation, and public service. Categories include:
